A new history of connectivity is written in the Northeast, In an important step towards green transportation, the first passenger train to run entirely on electric traction arrived at Kamakhya station in Guwahati on October 22. The train No. 05956 Delhi – Kamakhya (Brahmaputra) Mail Special leaving from national capital city reached Kamakhya station of Guwahati 13-30 hours covering more than 2000 Kms on electric traction. Taking to Twitter, Northeast Frontier Railway said, “Brahmaputra Mail today became the 1st passenger train @RailMinIndia reaching NE completing its journey from Delhi to Kamakhya of more than 2000 kms through electrified territory. DN Brahmaputra Mail also left Kamakhya for Delhi with electric traction. Thus starting a new era.” it was a step towards the electrification of all the main and branch lines across the region as this would translate into huge savings for NFR, one of the costliest zones for Indian Railways because of expenditure on diesel locomotives and maintenance of tracks and railway facilities on tough terrain. Now with the completion of Railway Electrification works and commissioning of the section up to Kamakhya, trains will come directly up to Kamakhya without change of traction.
