Now, Detention centres for foreigners have been renamed as ‘transit camps’. The Assam government has announced that detention centres for “foreigners” in Assam will now be named “transit camps”. Assam has six detention centres at Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Jorhat, Kokrajhar, Silchar and Tezpur. A stand-alone detention centre with a capacity to house 3,000 foreigners is under construction at Agia in Goalpara district. In Assam, which has seen streams of movement from East Bengal (later East Pakistan, including presently Bangladesh) over the years, there are six detention stations for accommodating “convicted foreigners”, including “declared foreigners”.
