World Rivers Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September every year to increase public awareness about rivers and to encourage their conservation. The day celebrates Earth's waterways, in which over 60 countries participate every year. Rivers (nadi, vahini) played an important role in the origin and development of Indian civilization. The Indus Valley civilization grew on the banks of major rivers like the Indus. Vedic civilization also grew on the banks of several major rivers, first in the northwest and later in the Gangetic plains. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday a river is not a physical thing but a living entity and urged people to observe World Rivers Day and keep in mind the importance of the water body has in our lives as he addressed the nation through his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio programme. This day is such a day that is very consistent with the traditions of India. It is about connecting with the traditions with which we have been associated for centuries.
