In a move that can be interpreted as an attempt to legally formalise China’s recent actions along with the border areas of India, the country, passed a law called ‘Land Border Law of the People’s Republic of China’ which will come into effect on 1 January 2022. China shares land borders with 14 countries and the new land border law will come into effect from 1 January 2022. The law will now govern how China guards its 22,000-km (13,670-mile) land border shared with 14 countries, including Russia, nuclear-capable North Korea and Mongolia besides India and Bhutan - two countries Beijing has land border disputes with. The law states that the state would take measures to better the level of border public services and infrastructure construction, improve the living conditions of locals living in border regions and support their livelihoods. The law prohibits the public or other organisations from indulging in any activities which “endanger national security or affect China’s friendly relations with neighbouring countries”. It also states that China would form joint border committees with countries to negotiate land border management.
